Nigeria’s Senate President, Sen. Godswill Akpabio, has officially declared the Ondo South Senatorial District seat vacant following the appointment of Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN).
The Senate President made this declaration on Tuesday, April 28, during plenary, informing lawmakers that Ibrahim’s new diplomatic role necessitated the vacancy of his seat in the upper legislative chamber.

Following the announcement, Akpabio called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to organise a bye-election within 30 days to fill the position, in accordance with existing electoral laws.
Akpabio also instructed the Clerk to the National Assembly to formally communicate the Senate’s resolution to INEC to ensure swift compliance.
The declaration marks the beginning of the process to elect a new representative for Ondo South in the Senate.
