Ndume Hails Tinubu’s ₦68bn Support For Maiduguri Power Project

Former Senate Leader and Senator representing Borno South in the 10th Senate, Sen. Ali Ndume, has heaped praises on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving ₦68 billion in operational funding for the Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant (MEPP).

This is as he described the move as vital for economic recovery and improved security in Borno State.

New Telegraph recalls that the power project, initiated in 2021, was designed as an emergency response to prolonged electricity outages in Maiduguri and surrounding areas after insurgents destroyed key transmission infrastructure.

The blackout, which lasted nearly two years, significantly disrupted economic activities and worsened living conditions in the state.

Under the approved plan, the funding will be released in phases, including a monthly operational support of ₦2 billion from March 2026 through December 2028.

The intervention is expected to address existing funding shortfalls and ensure the continued functioning of the plant.

Reacting to the development in a statement he personally signed, Ndume expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for responding to repeated calls from residents and stakeholders affected by the power crisis.

“I join the Governor of Borno State, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, and other well-meaning citizens in expressing profound appreciation to the President for this intervention aimed at ensuring a stable electricity supply,” Ndume said.

He noted that improved electricity supply would boost economic activities, particularly among small businesses and informal operators who depend heavily on power for their livelihoods.

Ndume further described the funding as a “lifeline” that could stimulate the growth of small and medium-scale enterprises, generate jobs, and help reduce the risk of unemployed youths being drawn into insurgent activities.

He also highlighted the potential security benefits of a steady electricity supply, saying it would enhance ongoing military operations by improving visibility and operational efficiency.

“Insurgents thrive in environments of darkness and limited visibility. The restoration of electricity will not only boost economic activities but also strengthen the resilience of our security architecture,” he added.

The lawmaker, however, urged government agencies, security forces, and local communities to work together to protect power infrastructure from vandalism and attacks.

“It is to the credit of the Federal Government that it has responded promptly to our concerns. We must now ensure that these facilities are protected.

The benefits of stable electricity are enormous, from improved livelihoods to enhanced security,” he said.
