The spokesman of the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organisation Afenifere, Prince Justice Faloye, has expressed deep concern over the political situation in the country, stating that Chapter Two of the Constitution, titled Fundamental Objectives and Directive Principles of State Policy, which spells out everything to make Nigeria great, has been ignored since 1999 by the ruling class.
He noted that the chapter outlines the foundational goals for Nigerian governance, but stated that instead of the politicians implementing the core goals of the chapter, they were busy entrenching ethnic, religious, and personality cult politics that would not uplift Nigerians.
Faloye, who is also the President of ASHE Foundation, a think tank group, stated: “With blood, sweat, and tears, Nigerians fought for democracy.
But when it was eventually won, the political class implemented the first part of the Constitution that gave them power and access to our commonwealth, but ignored the social contract with the people in part 2 of the Constitution.
“Nigerians were distracted with ethnic, religious, and personality cult politics to prevent them from asking for Chapter Two of the Constitution, titled Fundamental Objectives and Directive Principles of State Policy, which spells out everything to make Nigeria Great.
“Chapter Two outlines the foundational goals for Nigerian governance that include political, economic, social, educational, and foreign policy objectives, to ensure safety, welfare, and equality for citizens.
It emphasises that security and welfare are the primary purposes of government, proposing free education, free health, a self-reliant economy, among others.
Faloye lamented that it is unfortunate that citizens cannot sue the government over failure to implement it, stating that politicians were expected to adhere to what is essentially the spirit of the Constitution, constitutionalism.
