Nigeria’s Vice President, Sen. Kashim Shettima, has revealed that some individuals allegedly attempted to sow discord between him and President Bola Tinubu shortly after they assumed office in 2023.
Speaking on Tuesday during the public presentation of former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon’s autobiography, My Life of Duty and Allegiance, in Abuja, Shettima said some persons from his home state of Borno reportedly told President Tinubu that he was plotting to assassinate him and take over power.
According to him, the allegation was linked to traditional clothes he had earlier gifted Tinubu before the 2023 elections.
Shettima said Tinubu, however, dismissed the claims after questioning the logic behind the allegation.

“Three months into our swearing in, some people told Tinubu I was planning to kill him to take over power.
“The President had called me and said, ‘Sit down! Your people came to me and said, ‘ Stop wearing those Shettima’s clothes.
“But the President said their story did not add up. He said when you gave me those clothes, I was an aspirant. I would not have been the candidate, nor were you going to be the Vice Presidential candidate,” he said.
According to him, the accusers claimed he intended to use the clothes spiritually against the President after the election.
“Some people told him after the election that I was planning to use the clothes to kill him and take over. However, Tinubu wore the clothes after that because he is not a fetish,” Shettima added.
The Vice-President urged Nigerians to embrace unity and avoid actions capable of creating division within the country.
He advised citizens to see themselves as “their brother’s keeper, not merchants of division.”
