Opposition Coalition Pushes For Single Presidential Candidate Ahead Of 2027 Elections


Nigerian activist, Aisha Yesufu has said that opposition parties have agreed to present a single presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.

Yesufu made the disclosure through her official X account amid an ongoing opposition summit in Ibadan, where key political leaders are meeting to strategize ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Top opposition figures in Nigeria have converged on Ibadan on Saturday for a high-level political summit aimed at forging unity and possibly fielding a single presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Among those in attendance are former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi.

The summit, hosted by Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde at the Banquet Hall of the Agodi Government House, is themed “That We May Work Together for a United Opposition to Sustain Our Democracy.”

It has drawn participation from key opposition parties including the Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party, New Nigeria Peoples Party, and the African Democratic Congress.

Other prominent attendees include David Mark, Jerry Gana, Rauf Aregbesola, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, and Pat Utomi, among others.

Discussions at the ongoing summit are centered on Nigeria’s worsening security challenges, rising inflation, and broader socio-economic concerns, with participants expressing dissatisfaction with the policies of the ruling All Progressives Congress under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Speaking at the event, former Resident Electoral Commissioner Mike Igini emphasized the importance of credible institutions, noting that the Independent National Electoral Commission, the judiciary, and security agencies will play decisive roles in ensuring free and fair elections.
