Kano Assembly Sets Up 12-Man C’ttee To Screen Deputy Gov

The Kano State House of Assembly (KNHA) has constituted a 12-member committee to screen the Deputy Governor nominee, Murtala Sule Garo.

This followed the correspondence from the Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, requesting the House to screen and confirm the nominee.

The letter was read on the floor of the House during plenary by the Speaker, Jibril Ismail Falgore, on Wednesday, April 22.

According to the Speaker, Governor Yusuf is seeking approval for the appointment of Murtala Sule Garo as Deputy Governor pursuant to Section 191(3) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999.

The request followed the voluntary resignation of the former Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, on March 27, 2026, which created a vacancy in the office.

In the letter, Governor Yusuf stated that the nomination of Garo was the result of wide consultations across socio-political, religious, and cultural groups in the state.

He described the nominee as a seasoned public administrator with extensive experience at both grassroots and sub-national levels.

Garo has previously served as Special Adviser to the Governor on inter-party affairs, Chairman of Kabo Local Government Area, Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Kano State chapter, and Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

The governor expressed confidence that Garo’s experience, loyalty, and understanding of the political and administrative landscape would enhance governance and support the delivery of democratic dividends in the state.

He urged the House to expedite consideration of the nomination and grant the required constitutional approval.

Following deliberations, the House constituted a 12-member screening committee chaired by the Deputy Speaker, Muhammad Bello Butu Butu.

Other members include the Majority Leader, Chief Whip, Deputy Majority Leader, Majority Whip, and lawmakers representing Fagge, Sumaila, Warawa, Dawakin Kudu, and Tudun Wada constituencies.

The Deputy Clerk will serve as Secretary of the committee.

The committee has been mandated to screen the nominee and report back to the House on Monday.
