Hashim, Falana Meet Behind-Closed Door Over One-Party State

A former chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and 2027 presidential aspirant, Gbenga Hashim, has vowed to mount a pro-democracy front to resist any attempt to impose a one-party system in Nigeria.

Hashim made this declaration after a strategic meeting with the Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, as part of ongoing consultations with key stakeholders on safeguarding the country’s democratic structure.

According to Hashim, Falana is a long-time ally, noting that their relationship spans more than four decades, built on shared involvement in activism and advocacy for justice and democratic governance.

“We resolved to sustain the multi-party structure of Nigeria’s democracy and resist one-party rule,” Hashim said.

He recalled their participation in the anti-apartheid movement under the Nigeria–ANC Friendship and Cultural Association, including a protest in January 1988 during the visit of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, which led to the arrest of several activists.

He also referenced past legal battles against military rule, including a suit challenging the Structural Adjustment Programme under the administration of Ibrahim Babangida, in which Falana served as his lawyer.

He added that the alliance between the two men has remained focused on defending civil liberties, democratic values, and political plurality in Nigeria.

He added that the recent engagement reflects growing consultations among pro-democracy advocates concerned about the direction of the country’s political system.

Hashim reaffirmed his readiness to work with like-minded stakeholders to protect Nigeria’s multi-party democracy and ensure that democratic institutions remain strong and inclusive.
