Former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has blamed the reported poor funding of security in the country on corruption and misplacement of priority.
Atiku, in a press statement issued by his media office in Abuja, described the reported seven per cent of budget disbursement for security equipment in 2025 as “Scandalous indictment” of the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration.
He accused the administration of paying lip service to Nigeria’s security challenges, noting that 7 per cent disbursement of funds for equipment is too low to deal with the grim realities of battlefield challenges.
“A poorly equipped army can neither protect itself, nor the country it is supposed to serve,” he said, adding that lack of adequate funding compromises the security of the military and the country at large.
“Incompetence and corruption that cause lack of proper and timely disbursement of funds are the main enemies hindering the efforts to address security challenges,” Atiku said.
The former vice president called on President Bola Tinubu to apologise to Nigerians for the colossal incompetence and lethargy security challenges his administration has caused Nigerians.
“Non-implementation of budgetary allocations have severe consequences for national security, but the government is behaving with cavalier indifference because it’s more obsessed with the 2027 elections than the security of the country.
“No country can afford to disburse just seven percent for equipment purchase and expect its military to perform any magic,” Atiku added.
