Former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has explained that his decision to seek the Bauchi State governorship seat stems from his conviction that executive leadership offers greater opportunities to drive meaningful development.
Tuggar, who addressed journalists in Bauchi, said his experience as a legislator shaped his understanding of governance and the limitations of lawmaking in delivering rapid change.
“After serving in the legislature, I realised that making a significant impact through private member bills can be slow and challenging,” he said.
He added that the executive office provides broader powers to implement policies and transform society within a shorter period.
“A governor who is focused can achieve a great deal in a short time,” he stated.
Tuggar, who represented Gamawa Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives in 2007, said his entry into the 2011 governorship race was influenced by political realignments in the state and encouragement from his supporters.
He also linked his ambition to economic opportunities, particularly in agriculture, noting that global trends following the 2008 financial crisis made the sector attractive for investment.
“I saw the potential to attract investors, create jobs, and improve the livelihoods of our farmers,” he said.
While reiterating his ambition, Tuggar maintained that he remains committed to the APC and would abide by the party’s decisions regarding candidate selection for the 2027 elections.
