The All Progressives Congress in Gombe State has explained its decision to adopt a consensus approach in selecting candidates for the 2027 general elections, citing the need to strengthen unity and avoid internal conflicts.
At the centre of the decision is the emergence of Dr Jamilu Shaiyaku Gwamna as the party’s consensus governorship candidate, following what party leaders described as extensive consultations across all levels of the party structure.
The resolution was reached during an enlarged stakeholders’ meeting presided over by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, which brought together aspirants, members of the State Working Committee, party elders, and grassroots stakeholders.
The party officials said the consensus arrangement was deliberately adopted to minimise disputes, foster cohesion, and position the party for a stronger outing in the 2027 elections.
They noted that the process involved wide-ranging engagements led by the governor to ensure that all interests were considered.
Beyond the governorship ticket, the meeting also ratified consensus candidates for the three senatorial districts, six House of Representatives seats, and all 24 State House of Assembly constituencies in the state.
Those adopted for the Senate include DCP Mohammed Ahmadu Deba for Gombe Central, Hon. Jerry Damara for Gombe South, and Governor Inuwa Yahaya for Gombe North.
Similarly, the party endorsed candidates for the House of Representatives, including Hon. Usman Bello Kumo (Akko), Hon. Inuwa Garba (Yamaltu/Deba), Hon. Ali Isa JC (Balanga/Billiri), Hon. Fatima Binta Bello (Kaltungo/Shongom), Hon. Saddam Bello (Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye), and Hon. Jamilu Shabewa (Dukku/Nafada).
The meeting was attended by national and zonal party officials, including the Deputy National Financial Secretary, alongside other senior stakeholders.
Party leaders expressed confidence that the consensus strategy would consolidate internal unity and enhance the APC’s chances of success in the 2027 general elections.
