Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has stepped down as the National Chairman of the African Action Congress following his emergence as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
The party announced Sowore’s resignation in a statement issued on Tuesday shortly after the conclusion of its presidential primary in Abuja, where delegates and party leaders endorsed him as the AAC flagbearer.
The AAC also confirmed the appointment of Samuel Ajeigbe as the new National Chairman of the party.

“Omoyele Sowore has officially stepped down as the National Chairman of the African Action Congress.
“The party hereby welcomes Samuel Ajeigbe as the new National Chairman of our great party,” the statement partly read.
Sowore’s exit from the party’s leadership is part of its preparations for the 2027 elections.
The activist secured the presidential ticket through a unanimous endorsement during the primary election held in the Federal Capital Territory, with supporters and delegates applauding his emergence.
Speaking after accepting the nomination, Sowore said the AAC remained committed to building what he described as a “new Nigeria” free from corruption, insecurity and poor governance.
He also praised party members for their resilience despite prevailing economic and political challenges in the country.
During his address at the primary, Sowore criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress, dismissing claims surrounding the scale of participation in the party’s presidential primary.
“There is no way APC can have 10 million people as members.
“I can guarantee you that APC cannot boast of 10,000 members,” Sowore said.
The AAC presidential candidate pledged to continue mobilising support ahead of the 2027 election as the party positions itself as an alternative political platform.
