WEP Partners Niger Govt On Climate Action Plan


As part of plans to mitigate flooding, drought, erosion, and environmental degradation across the state, stakeholders in Niger State have been charged to strengthen their commitments towards effective climate action initiatives capable of tackling disasters.

Making the call, during a stakeholders’ engagement on the Review and Validation of the Draft, Climate Change Strategic Action Plan for Local Government Areas in the State, the representative of the Women Environmental Programme (WEP), Damaris Uja said the Action Plan will aid in addressing environmental challenges and strengthening climate resilience at the grassroots level.

According to her, “this is a clarion call for us to deliberate on practical and sustainable solutions to climate-related challenges affecting communities across the state.

“We call on all stakeholders, local government authorities, and community leaders to strengthen their commitment towards effective climate action initiatives capable of tackling flooding, drought, erosion, and environmental degradation across the state.”

The engagement in collaboration with Community Development and Climate Care (CDCC), Niger State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Niger State Ministry of Environment, and Abdulkadir Kure University, Minna had Climate Change Desk Officers from the 25 Local Government Areas of the State, development partners, and government representatives.

Earlier in his welcome remarks, the Founder and Executive Director, Community Development and Climate Care (CDCC), Richard Umar Abubakar emphasised the importance of collaboration, policy implementation, and collective responsibility, adding that “the Stakeholders are to produce a comprehensive Climate Change Strategic Action Plan for Local Government Areas in the State.”

Speaking also, the Vice Chancellor, Abdulkadir Kure University, Minna, Prof. Mohammed Aliyu Paiko, represented by the Director of ICT, Umar Ramadan Zakari, reaffirmed the University’s commitment to sustainability, innovation, youth empowerment, and community development through its Greentech and Entrepreneurship Hub.

The engagement ended with renewed commitment by participants towards implementing community-based climate action plans aimed at building resilient and environmentally sustainable communities across Niger State.
