…Deals Blow to Turaki-Led Faction
On Thursday, the Supreme Court nullified the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, in November 2025, bringing an end to a prolonged legal dispute over the legitimacy of the exercise.
The convention, conducted on November 15 and 16, 2025, had produced a factional leadership headed by Tanimu Turaki, SAN.
However, the gathering had been mired in controversy from the outset, as it took place despite existing court orders restraining the party from proceeding with the event.

Earlier, a Federal High Court had barred the convention, citing violations of the party’s constitution and failure to follow due process. The court also pointed to unresolved issues arising from state congresses and the exclusion of some aspirants, concluding that the process was fundamentally flawed.
Despite the court order, the convention went ahead, triggering fresh legal challenges.
Subsequently, the Court of Appeal upheld the decision of the lower court, ruling that the convention was conducted in defiance of valid judicial directives and that its outcome could not be upheld.
Dissatisfied with the rulings, the Turaki-led faction approached the Supreme Court, seeking to overturn the decisions and validate both the convention and the leadership it produced.
In its final judgment, the apex court affirmed the earlier rulings, declaring the Ibadan convention invalid and effectively nullifying the factional executives that emerged from it.
The verdict settles the legal battle over the disputed convention and reinforces prior judicial findings that the process breached established procedures and court orders.
