RCCG Debunks Viral Claim Linking Adeboye to Anti-Jonathan

The Redeemed Christian Church of God has dismissed claims circulating online that its General Overseer, Enoch Adeboye, participated in or led a protest against the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

In a statement released on Tuesday, 2 June, 2026 the church said a photograph showing Adeboye holding a placard during a public walk had been repeatedly misrepresented on social media.

According to RCCG, the image was taken during a peaceful nationwide walk organised under the directive of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The church explained that congregations across the country participated in the exercise after church services to draw attention to the killings of Christians and to call on the government to take stronger measures to protect lives.

“A false narrative has been circulating online, accompanied by a photograph of Pastor E.A. Adeboye holding a placard during a public walk. The image has repeatedly been misrepresented as evidence that Pastor Adeboye led or participated in a protest against the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

“This claim is FALSE,” the statement said.

RCCG noted that Adeboye participated in the walk held in Ebute Metta, Lagos, as part of the nationwide exercise and stressed that the event had no connection with Jonathan’s administration.

“The walk in Ebute Metta, where Pastor Adeboye participated, was part of that nationwide exercise. It was neither organized against President Goodluck Jonathan nor connected in any way to his administration.”

The church further stated that Adeboye’s message during the event focused on the sanctity of human life and the need to protect all Nigerians regardless of religious affiliation.

“Pastor Adeboye’s message during the walk was clear: all lives matter to God. His placard emphasized the value of every human life, regardless of religious affiliation. The call was for the protection of innocent Nigerians, both Christians and Muslims.”

Addressing criticisms that the cleric should publicly direct political leaders on governance matters, RCCG maintained that Adeboye’s role is spiritual rather than political.

“Pastor Adeboye is a clergyman, not the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. Nevertheless, he has not remained silent.”

The church added that the 84-year-old cleric continues to provide moral guidance and spiritual leadership while operating within the limits of his office as a minister of the Gospel.

RCCG also clarified that Adeboye does not hold political office, cannot command the President or First Lady, and that the church is neither a political party nor affiliated with any political organisation.

The church urged members of the public to verify information concerning Adeboye or RCCG through its official communication channels before sharing such claims.
