The executive members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Osun State Council, have reaffirmed their commitment to promoting ethical journalism and preserving cultural heritage through strengthened collaboration with the Ooni’s Palace in Ile-Ife.
The newly elected NUJ leadership, led by Chairman Adeyemi Aboderin, made this known during a courtesy visit to the Director of Media and Public Affairs to the Ooni of Ife, Otunba Moses Olafare, at the palace press office on Monday.
The visit, according to a statement issued by the Senior Media Officer at the palace, Sodiq Lawal, formed part of the union’s strategic engagement with key stakeholders aimed at fostering professional relationships and enhancing the role of the media in Osun State.
Speaking during the engagement, Aboderin said the visit was not only to formally introduce the new executive members but also to deepen cooperation with the palace in promoting responsible journalism and projecting the rich cultural identity of the Yoruba people.
He stressed that the media remains a critical institution in shaping public perception and safeguarding tradition, noting that the NUJ under his leadership would prioritise accuracy, fairness, and professionalism in reportage.
“We recognise the Ooni’s Palace as a custodian of culture and tradition. As journalists, we have a duty to ensure that our reportage reflects these values while promoting unity and development across the state,” he said.
In his response, Olafare congratulated the NUJ executives on their election, describing their emergence as a call to service at a time when credible information dissemination is vital to societal growth.
He commended journalists in the state for their sustained support in projecting the activities of the palace, noting that the media has remained instrumental in showcasing the cultural heritage of Ile-Ife to a global audience.
Olafare urged the NUJ leadership to continue to uphold the principles of objectivity and balance, while also leveraging their platforms to promote peace and cohesion within Osun State.
“The Ooni’s Palace values its relationship with the media and will continue to support initiatives that promote cultural diplomacy and national unity,” he said.
The visit underscores growing recognition of the media’s role not only as a watchdog but also as a partner in cultural preservation and community development, particularly in a state widely regarded as a cradle of Yoruba civilisation.
