LG launches smart dehumidifier in Nigeria to fight mould

LG Electronics has introduced a new smart dehumidifier into the Nigerian market, as rising humidity levels continue to worsen indoor air quality and increase health risks across the country.

The product was unveiled in Abuja on Wednesday, with the firm positioning it as a response to the persistent moisture challenges experienced during the rainy season and in densely populated urban centres.

Speaking at the launch, the Head of Corporate Marketing, LG Electronics, Mr Paul Mba, said the appliance was designed to significantly reduce indoor moisture levels and improve living conditions.

“Our dehumidifier removes up to 30 litres of moisture daily, equivalent to extracting water from over a hundred standard bottles, making it a strong ally against the persistent humidity that many Nigerian cities face,” he said.

Mba added that the device was built to function efficiently across varying environments, noting that it would be effective in both residential and commercial settings nationwide.

He explained that the appliance is powered by the company’s Dual Inverter Compressor technology, which adjusts performance based on real-time humidity levels.

“Central to the appliance is LG’s Dual Inverter Compressor technology, which intelligently adjusts its operation based on real-time humidity, ensuring effective moisture control while lowering energy consumption, which is key for consumers mindful of power use,” he stated.

The company noted that excessive indoor moisture has become a growing concern in Nigeria, contributing to mould growth, damage to household items, and health complications linked to poor air quality.

Also speaking at the event, the Assistant Product Manager for Eco-solutions, Ms Yeeun Kim, said many Nigerians underestimate the long-term effects of high humidity on health and property.

“Many Nigerians experience the discomfort of excessive humidity without fully understanding its long-term impact on health and household items. With this Smart Dehumidifier, LG offers a practical approach to enhance comfort, protect homes, and promote energy efficiency, solutions tailored to the Nigerian climate,” she said.

Beyond moisture extraction, the appliance is fitted with a HEPA H13 Safe Plus Filter designed to trap dust, allergens, and airborne bacteria commonly found in damp indoor spaces.

Providing further details, the Product Specialist Trainer, Mr Gbenga Ogunbayo, said the device operates at a low noise level, making it suitable for everyday indoor use.

“The appliance operates quietly at about 33 decibels, making it suitable for bedrooms, offices, and living spaces without causing disturbance,” he said.

Ogunbayo added that two models were introduced into the market, a 34-litre capacity unit and a 28-litre variant, both equipped with adaptive humidity control technology.

He noted that the product also integrates smart features that allow users to monitor and control humidity levels remotely through smartphones.

“Users benefit from LG ThinQ technology, enabling remote control and monitoring of humidity levels via smartphones. The dehumidifier’s design prioritises convenience, with waist-level handles, 360-degree caster wheels for easy movement, and transparent water tanks for quick water level checks,” he said.

He added that the appliance includes specialised accessories such as Shoe Dry Y-hose and Closet Dry T-hose to support targeted drying in enclosed spaces like wardrobes and shoe racks.

On distribution, the Abuja Branch Manager of Fouani Nigeria Ltd, Mr Moustafa Kharis, said the product was already available nationwide through the company’s retail network.

“We are seeing growing demand across Nigeria for products that improve indoor wellness and comfort. The LG Smart Dehumidifier is now available across Fouani showrooms, ready to support homes, offices, hospitality venues, and commercial spaces where humidity control is increasingly essential,” he said.

Kharis added that customers would have access to demonstrations, technical guidance, and after-sales support through the firm’s outlets.

Earlier, a quality, health, safety, environment, and sustainability professional, Hakeem Mukhtar, told The PUNCH that mould infestation was an often-overlooked contributor to public health crises in homes, particularly in tropical regions like Nigeria, where high humidity, poor ventilation, and frequent rainfall create the perfect breeding ground for mould growth.
