No fewer than five persons sustained varying degrees of injuries in a multiple-vehicle accident that occurred on Sunday at the Toll Gate area of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway in Ogun State.
The crash, which happened around 11:35 a.m., involved a truck, six cars and two tricycles, according to the Public Relations Officer of the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi.
Akinbiyi confirmed the incident on Monday, stating that 11 persons, comprising eight males and three females, were involved in the accident.
He disclosed that five victims, including three females and two males, sustained injuries, while other occupants escaped unharmed.
According to him, three of the injured victims were rushed to the General Hospital, Ota, for medical attention, while family members took the remaining two victims to undisclosed hospitals for treatment.
Akinbiyi attributed the accident to excessive speeding and brake failure.
He explained that the truck, bearing registration number TRN 71 XB, reportedly suffered brake failure, causing the driver to lose control before crashing into other vehicles on the busy highway.
“The truck driver lost control after the brake failed and rammed into several vehicles on the expressway,” he said.
The TRACE spokesman added that officials quickly evacuated the affected vehicles from the scene to restore free flow of traffic along the corridor.
He urged motorists to avoid speeding and ensure that their vehicles are in good mechanical condition before embarking on journeys.
The Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway is one of the busiest highways linking Lagos and Ogun states and has witnessed several accidents in recent times, many of which have been linked to reckless driving and poor vehicle maintenance.
