EcoSmart Club has announced an initiative to mobilise students to tackle environmental challenges within their communities through recycling, waste management, sustainability advocacy, and other eco-friendly projects in commemoration of World Environment Day.
According to a statement from EcoSmart Club, secondary school students across Nigeria will participate in hands-on climate action projects as it prepares to launch its National School Climate Action Week from 1 to 6 June 2026.
The founder of EcoSmart Club, Hannah Omokhaye, stated that the programme aims to move climate engagement beyond awareness campaigns and encourage practical environmental action among young Nigerians.
Omokhaye said, “The National School Climate Action Week was created to move climate engagement beyond awareness and into practical action while preparing young Nigerians to become environmentally conscious citizens and future leaders.”
The organisation stated that participating schools will implement environmentally friendly projects within their communities and document their activities through photographs and short videos.
It added that the submissions would be reviewed and featured in daily “School Spotlights” to showcase innovative student-led solutions to environmental problems.
Project Manager Temidayo Arewa said the initiative focused on secondary school students because they were at a formative stage where lifelong values and habits could still be shaped.
“Sparking their interests in climate action will have long-lasting ripple effects on environmental sustainability in Nigeria,” Arewa said.
The organisation explained that storytelling would remain a major part of the campaign as students’ experiences and climate solutions would be amplified online to inspire similar projects in other schools and communities.
It added that organisers would release a report after the programme to detail participation metrics, key outcomes, and lessons learned.
The group also disclosed that participating schools will receive certificates, while selected projects could enjoy continued visibility through follow-up features and impact tracking.
EcoSmart Club urged interested secondary schools across the country to register for the initiative through its online registration platform.
