The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) has installed 1Mgwt of Hybrid Solar Energy at the Bayero University Kano, BUK, as part of President Tinubu’s Energy Renewed Hopes Agenda, which was aimed to cover 36 States and Abuja.
Speaking while unveiling the BUK Hybrid Solar Energy system, the Director General of the Commission, Dr Mustapha Abdullahi, hinted that they have already mobilised across the 36 states and Abuja to have about 150 megawatts to be installed.
According to him, President Tinubu has also made a pledge that Nigerians will enjoy 30 megawatts of solar for renewable energy, adding that it is not just in the books; this is a practical example of government presence.
“So we want to take this opportunity to also thank the President for the budgetary allocations, without the release of funds, we won’t be here”.
“We have a system, a hybrid system to be installed here. And I must say, this is the first of its kind. It’s using a technology just to survive. You have a panel that, even if you have a shade or you have dust on it, will definitely still produce or harvest electricity.”
He added, “If you also look into the banner, you will see a smart monitoring system. It means that from your phone or devices, the laptop, you will be able to control to see the load and also if it has any differences. If you look down, you see the inverter and battery all interconnected.”
He said the Solar Energy Renewed Hopes system means that it’s going to come with an array of tools together. It’s not an isolated system where you have the inverter and battery together. It’s going to come in a centralised fashion, which means that it’s not going to be complicated.
Dr Mustapha hints that they have spoken to the University, and they have more than 40,000 people, also for sustainable energy generation here. Now, we’ve decided to start with 1 megawatt. I’ve made a pledge already to add 1 megawatt, and also put 4.5 megawatt, at the University.
“We will come back, audit the system, then add more Solar Energy at the place so that by that time we will lift the University up to the National Grid, which will give them a full-time power supply, uninterrupted.
On behalf of the federal government and on behalf of the management of ECN, which is the sole responsibility of supervising and driving this project of renewable solarisation project of Mr President, I would like to commend President Tinubu for giving the chance to help Nigeria and Nigerians out of the quandary of energy supply.
