Digital Trail Links INEC Chairman To Pro-APC X Account — ICIR

A new report by the International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR) has once again alleged that the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan, operated an X  account that shared content supportive of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 general elections.

The allegation focuses on an account previously identified as @joashamupitan, which reportedly engaged with political posts at the time.

According to the report, one such interaction included a response to a message by former APC National Youth Leader, Dayo Israel, celebrating an electoral victory in an Igbo-majority area of Lagos, where the account commented, “Victory is sure.”

Following public backlash, the account was later renamed @Sundayvibe00*lon on April 10, 2026. It was subsequently made private and marked as a parody account.

As part of efforts to verify the claim, publicly available contact details linked to Amupitan were examined. These included a phone number and email addresses found in his curriculum vitae published online.

The information reportedly matches details currently being shared across social media platforms.

Using verification tools such as Truecaller and financial account data, investigators established links between the phone number and multiple email addresses associated with Amupitan.

Additional checks revealed another Gmail account tied to the same number.

To further probe the connection, an account recovery attempt was carried out on X using the account’s ID.

The masked recovery data—specifically parts of the phone number and email addresses—closely aligned with Amupitan’s publicly available contact details.

This overlap suggests a possible link between the account and his personal information.

However, definitive confirmation would require access to restricted platform data such as login records, IP addresses, and device history, which are not publicly accessible.

However, some social media users also turned to Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, including Grok, to verify the claim.

In certain cases, the tool indicated that the account belonged to Amupitan and even referenced its username history.

However, such tools rely on publicly available information and are known to produce inaccuracies. As a result, their outputs cannot be considered conclusive evidence.

In one instance, the tool confirmed the existence of the @joashamupitan account and attributed it to Prof. Amupitan, stating it was created in September 2022.

It also noted that the account later transitioned to @Sundayvibe00 and was eventually labelled a parody account after earlier political posts resurfaced.

In response to the ongoing crisis, the Independent National Electoral Commission rejected the allegation, maintaining that the chairman has no connection to the account.

According to the commission, the account was created by impersonators and has been reported to security agencies for investigation.

“The INEC Chairman does not own or operate any personal account on X.

He has at no time engaged in partisan commentary, nor has he ever associated himself with any political leaning or activity in his private or public capacity,” the commission stated.

Despite the denial, there is currently no publicly released forensic analysis that independently confirms or disproves the alleged link between the chairman and the account.
