Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has called on the leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and former governor of the state, Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to align himself with the present administration for the development of a “new Kano.”
“I call on him to look beyond personal interests and come on board to join the train of peace and the new Kano project that will ensure a stable and progressive state,” the governor said.
Governor Yusuf, who spoke during the annual Hawan Nasarawa on Friday, said his main mission is to build a greater Kano founded on unity, peace, and prosperity for the people.
He said, “When I held a programme some days ago, I looked around and saw that almost everybody was there except Kwankwaso. Even governors who had issues with their deputies reconciled on that day.”
The governor commended the Emir of Kano for the wise counsel he has consistently offered, but noted that his humility should not be mistaken for weakness.
“I have never feared anybody in my life. My humility is not cowardice; it is simply my way of being good and down-to-earth with the people,” he said.
According to him, his administration met the state in a deplorable condition, with declining social values and widespread disorder.
“When we came in, we met things in decay. The behavioural attitude of our people had deteriorated. That was why we introduced several measures to correct the ills without rancour,” he stated.
Governor Yusuf explained that the government deliberately avoided actions that could trigger violence, citing the decision to suspend the Hawan Daushe two years ago in order to prevent bloodshed.
“If we had met Kano in its former peaceful state, we would have taken strict measures against anyone trying to create problems. We tried to stop bloodshed like what happened two years ago, which was why we suspended the Hawan Daushe,” he added.
The governor also assured the Emir that he would remain firmly on the throne, adding that preparations were underway for a grand Durbar celebration.
“A day is coming for a Durbar that will shake the world. It is only a matter of days,” he said.
He urged residents to remain patient and supportive, noting that the administration’s peaceful approach had helped restore reconciliation and stability in the state.
“The strategy we are applying is what has resulted in reconciliation and made peace possible in Kano,” he said.
Governor Yusuf further disclosed that while 85 per cent of his advisers are performing well, about 15 per cent are creating unnecessary problems within the government.
“Be warned, we are watching. Sooner or later, we will come after those responsible, and they will face the consequences of their negative actions,” he warned.
He added that the government is spending N9.9 billion to rehabilitate the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant, alongside another major investment in the Challawa Water Works, to ensure access to potable drinking water across Kano State.
