There appears to be no end in sight to the crisis rocking the Benue State council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) as the Correspondents’ Chapel have pull out of the council’s activities and accused the state Chairman, Mr Bemdoo Ugber, of alleged multi-million naira financial Impropriety, gross abuse of office, and dragging the union’s into disrepute.
At an emergency congress in Makurdi, members of the Chapel passed a vote of no confidence on the NUJ State Chairman, Comrade Bemdoo Ugber, alleging that he diverted union funds, commercialized the council bus, and was running the union as a personal property.
The Chapel particularly alleged that over N5 million realized from NUJ-owned schools and the Rector of Federal Polytechnic, Wannune, have not been properly accounted for.
The Chapel further claimed that out of the N10 million support fund, a bus, and palm trees donated to the union by Governor Hyacinth Alia, the Chairman allegedly diverted N3.5 million without clear explanation.
The Chapel condemned what it described as the “commercialisation” of the NUJ bus, alleging that journalists were forced to pay as much as N50,000 before being allowed access to the vehicle.
