On Friday, the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to consider increasing Nigeria’s national minimum wage to ₦100,000.

Governor AbdulRazaq made this appeal during a Sallah homage by members of the Governors’ Forum to the President at his Lagos residence.

Saturday Telegraph reports that the delegation was led by the Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima.

Speaking during the visit, the NGF Chairman argued that many states were already paying salaries close to the proposed amount and called for a broader conversation on reviewing the current wage structure.

According to him, discussions on a new wage benchmark have become necessary in light of prevailing economic realities and the efforts by several state governments to improve workers’ welfare.

“On the issue of minimum wage, most of the states are paying almost ₦100,000 today and I urge Your Excellency, let’s all have a discussion in moving the minimum wage to ₦100,000.

“We know we will get the normal support from you as we go ahead to implement that,” AbdulRazaq said.

The governor’s proposal comes amid ongoing debates over workers’ welfare, rising living costs and the sustainability of wage obligations across the federation.

His remarks also underscore growing calls from state governments and labour stakeholders for a fresh review of Nigeria’s wage framework to reflect current economic conditions.
