The Labour Party (LP) on Friday screened two aspirants who obtained its nomination forms for the 2027 presidency.
The aspirants, Dr Peter Agada and Samuel Nwigwe, were screened by a committee headed by the Labour Party National Chairman, Senator Easter Nenadi Usman.
Agada, who is from Benue State, told journalists that zoning is not in the Nigerian Constitution or in the constitution of any of the registered political parties.
“It is a gentleman’s agreement,” he stated, adding that it left for the party to decide where its presidential candidate in 2027 will come from.
The Labour Party has zoned its presidential ticket to the South, and Senator Usman stated on Thursday that any Northerner vying for the party’s ticket for the 2027 knows that he is not eligible.
Nonetheless, Agada believes that his former position as Director of Finance in Obidient Movement positioned him very well to win the 2027 presidential election if the Labour Party decides to give him the ticket.
“I had over 500 support groups under me. The groups were connected into a unified council. We are not afraid to build it again, including the Obidient 2.0,” he stated.
Nwigwe who is from Ebonyi, said Nigeria requires a new governance structure, and promised to reposition the country for sustainable development.
The aspirant also called for constitutional reforms, improved security and an end to political violence.
“Our constitution needs to be restructured and reformed. We need a constitution that will unite Nigeria and create a balanced and fair country,” he said.
The committee also screened other aspirants for other positions, including Chief Solomon Onyejido, who is an aspirant for the Nkwerre/Isu/Nwangele/Njaba Federal Constituency in Imo.
Onyejido, a Port Harcourt-based businessman, said the Labour Party is positioned to take power from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
He assured of credible representation and delivery of democratic dividends, if elected.
“In l my constituency, we are not talking about party; we are talking about who represents the people well.
“The people believe that if I am there, the needed changes and development due to my federal constituency will get to them,” he boasted.
