It was a carnival-like atmosphere at Haliru Abdu Multipurpose Stadium, Birnin Kebbi, where stakeholders and thousands of All Progressives Congress (APC) members converged to affirm Governor Nasir Idris as the party’s governorship candidate for the 2027 general elections.
Delegations of party faithful from the 21 Local Government Areas of the state joined hundreds of major stakeholders who reaffirmed their confidence in Governor Idris, turning the historic ceremony into a display of unity and purpose.
The delegation from the APC National Secretariat, sent to supervise the exercise, was led by former Deputy Governor of Bauchi State, Alhaji Abdulmalik Muhammad.
He said he was overwhelmed by the uncommon unity and shared commitment on display.
Performing the duty on behalf of the committee, Abdulmalik declared: “Considering the calibre of politicians we have seen and the mammoth crowd of party loyalists, there is an indisputable consensus for the continuity of Governor Idris in view of the remarkable development achieved in all sectors.”
Following the stipulated rules for the affirmation, the chairman put the question to the gathering.
The crowd responded with a resounding ovation, affirming and endorsing Comrade Nasir Idris as the party’s governorship candidate for 2027. Many declared that “one good term deserves another.”
Apart from the thousands of party faithful present, prominent stakeholders in attendance included three former state governors, serving and former members of the National Assembly, former and serving ministers, chief executives of federal and state boards and commissions, and serving and former speakers and members of the Kebbi State House of Assembly.
Representatives of organised trade unions, youth and women’s associations, and ethnic, religious, and cultural organisations also attended.
Many said they had benefited in various ways from Governor Nasir Idris’s administration.
In his acceptance speech, Comrade Nasir Idris expressed profound gratitude to Allah for granting him sound health and wisdom to serve the people selflessly and achieve the progress being celebrated.
He thanked all party members whose cooperation made the consensus reached during the National Assembly primaries possible.
“The presence of both elected and appointed political leaders since the advent of the present democratic dispensation in 1999 underscores their acknowledgement of my performance and their preference for the continuity of my administration,” he said.
Governor Idris said that, based on the conviction of the people of Kebbi State, “That one good term deserves another,” he would redouble his efforts to sustain socio-economic development programmes and projects to justify the confidence reposed in him.
There appears to be growing political awareness among Nigerians about the factors considered when choosing candidates for elective office.
These include a track record of integrity and verifiable, community-impacting developmental projects, as well as the provision of employment opportunities.
Comrade Governor Nasir Idris was known for his philanthropic and humanitarian services to communities long before he entered partisan politics.
Those experiences have guided his decision-making and the implementation of results-oriented governance.
The achievements recorded in infrastructure and socio-economic development so far are widely regarded as unprecedented in the state’s history, demonstrating his capacity and determination to change the narrative of Kebbi’s development.
