Lagos NLC, TUC Rally Behind Hamzat, Seek Wage Review

The governorship ambition of Lagos State Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, received a boost on Friday, as the state chapters of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) declared support for his candidacy ahead of the 2027 elections.

The Labour Union made this endorsement during the 2026 Workers’ Day celebration, where labour leaders expressed confidence in Hamzat’s capacity to sustain and improve the state’s development trajectory.

Saturday Telegraph reports that the recent endorsement adds to the earlier backing from key stakeholders, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and other party leaders.

Others are Cornelius Ojelabi and Rt. Hon. Mudasiru Obasa, alongside industry groups including the Association of Waste Managers of Nigeria (AWAMN).

Speaking on behalf of the unions, Lagos NLC Chairperson, Funmi Sessi, described Hamzat as a capable and dependable leader.

“Hamzat is loyal, competent, tested and trusted. His victory will ensure that continued developmental strides are achieved by successive administrations in the state.”

While commending the state government’s efforts on workers’ welfare, the unions called for a significant upward review of wages in response to rising inflation and the cost of living.

Sessi urged an increase in the minimum wage from ₦85,000 to ₦225,000, noting that current earnings are insufficient to meet basic needs in Lagos.

In his remarks, Hamzat expressed appreciation for the endorsement and assured workers of continued commitment to development.

“We will not let you down… The developmental trajectory will be improved upon in Lagos.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu also commended labour leaders for their constructive engagement, reiterating the government’s readiness to sustain dialogue and collaboration.

Hamzat, who described his ambition as “audacious,” said his years of experience in governance have prepared him for the task ahead.

“Having served as Deputy Governor of Lagos… I’ve learned a lot. I know the room. I know where the kitchen is.”

With endorsements mounting and internal party backing consolidating, political observers say Hamzat’s candidacy is gaining significant momentum ahead of the APC governorship primaries in Lagos.
