OPM Pastor Offers Autistic Daughter Up For Marriage


The recent announcement made by the founder of Omega Power Ministries (OPM), Chibuzor Chinyere, to find a husband for his 21-year-old autistic adopted daughter, Chiemeka Chibuzor, accompanied by financial and welfare incentives, has sparked controversy.

The OPM Pastor, who made this announcement on Tuesday in a Facebook post, said that the initiative aimed to safeguard the young woman’s future and protect her welfare

“I am giving out another of my adopted daughters in marriage. Her name is Chiemeka Chibuzor. She is 21 years old and has autism. She can speak and hear well,” he wrote.

Chinyere specified requirements for potential suitors, emphasising that the person must be youthful and in good physical and mental health.

In exchange, he assured ongoing financial assistance, complimentary housing, and a residence to be co-owned by the pair.

He additionally revealed that the church would carry out regular, unannounced checks to assess her well-being, emphasising that this action aims to ensure her safety and appropriate care.

The announcement has ignited discussions in social and civic environments, as numerous Nigerians express worries regarding consent, dignity, and the morality of organising marriages for those with cognitive disabilities.

The advancement occurred weeks after the cleric helped arrange the marriage of a non-verbal autistic individual known as Aboy, an action that also sparked varied responses across the country.

After receiving backlash for that, Chinyere presented the man, now called Elijah, with a car and a piece of land, and named him an ambassador for the church’s free school for kids with autism and Down syndrome.

Observers note that although initiatives to assist vulnerable individuals are praiseworthy, these efforts should be handled carefully, especially concerning matters of personal choice and long-term well-being.

As reactions escalate, the recent development has again highlighted wider inquiries regarding how society safeguards and empowers individuals with disabilities while respecting their rights
