With a little over 13 months to the end of the two term tenure of nine governors, the battle of succession for them has begun in earnest ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The race for the Government’s House in Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Kwara, Lafia, Bauchi, Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe has left pundits with permutations on who succeeds Governors Babajide Sanwo–Olu, Seyi Makinde, Abdulrahman Abdulrazak, Bala Mohammed, Ahmadu Fintiri, Abdullahi Sule, and Mai Mala Buni.
While some of the outgoing governors have their eyes on the Senate, come the 11th National Assembly, others keep the nation guessing as to what they will embrace in the next dispensation.
Also, there has been a plethora of aspirants who want to take over from the current tenants of the Government Houses. Those, who are yet to make their future political life known are Sanwo-Olu, Makinde, Mohammed, Fintiri, and Buni, while Sule has reneged on his promise of not going to the Senate.
Abdulrazak has said that he is not interested in building a political dynasty. However, the situation in Borno State will be very exciting as Prof Umara Zulum will have to wait on his political godfather, Senator Kashim Shettima, who calls the shots in the North East region.
