As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen security within the University and its host communities, the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University Gusau (FUGUS), Professor Tukur Adamu, alongside members of his Management Team, has paid courtesy visits to key Security Agencies in Zamfara State.
In a statement issued by the Chief Information Officer of the University, Jamilu Ibrahim Gusau, it was revealed that the agencies visited include the Zamfara State Police Command, the Nigerian Army 1 Brigade Headquarters, the State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the Zamfara Community Protection Guards.
Speaking during the visits, the Vice Chancellor, who took the mantle of leadership barely two months ago, said the engagements were aimed at formally introducing himself to the Heads of the Security Agencies while appreciating their sustained efforts in safeguarding the University, and seeking enhanced collaboration to further improve resistance to threats on the Campus and in the host communities.
“I have been briefed by the University Security Officer on the immense support and cooperation my predecessor enjoyed from your agencies, which has significantly contributed to the uninterrupted academic activities in the University despite the prevailing security challenges in the state,” Professor Adamu stated.
Professor Adamu specifically advocated for the deployment of additional security personnel to the University’s host communities, regardless of where the majority of staff and students reside, stressing the need for proactive measures to ensure their safety.
The Vice Chancellor also assured the agencies of his administration of his continued support and cooperation in their collective efforts to secure the University and its surroundings.
In their separate responses, the Zamfara State Commissioner of Police, Ahmad Muhammad Bello, the Commander 1 Brigade Nigerian Army Headquarters, Brigadier General Mustapha Jimoh, the State Commandant of NSCDC, Sani Mustapha, and the Commandant of the Zamfara Community Protection Guards, AIG Muhammad Shehu Dalijan (Rtd), commended the Vice Chancellor for the engagements.
They each reaffirmed their agencies’ commitment to strengthening collaboration with the University with a view to enhancing the safety and security of staff, students, and host communities.
The visit also provided an avenue for fruitful discussions between the University Management and the Security Chiefs on some vital issues, including Staff/ Students/ community sensitisation and the adoption of more proactive strategies to curb criminal activities and address the root causes of the protracted security challenges.
