Women bankers push for 40% representation on bank boards

The Association of Professional Women Bankers has renewed its call for increased female representation on the boards of Nigerian banks, urging the industry to raise women’s inclusion from the current 30 per cent to at least 40 per cent.

The call was made at APWB’s end-of-year wellness and networking event, Fit to Lead, which brought together female banking professionals to reflect on leadership, well-being, and career advancement. The event focused on holistic development and underscored the link between wellness and effective leadership.

Speaking at the event, APWB Chairperson, Rafiat Onitiri, said women make up nearly 60 per cent of Nigeria’s banking workforce but remain under-represented at the highest levels of decision-making.

“Even achieving 40 per cent representation would be a major milestone,” Onitiri said.

“This is not about numerical equality but about fairness. Women contribute significantly to the growth and stability of the banking industry and deserve opportunities and recognition that reflect those contributions.”

She added that a stronger female presence on bank boards would enhance diversity of thought, strengthen governance, and support more sustainable business outcomes across the sector.

The event featured guided aerobics, stretching sessions, and group fitness activities led by professional instructors.

According to Onitiri, the initiative was designed to encourage women to prioritise self-care, reconnect with one another, and restore balance after a demanding year.

“Leadership is demanding, and for women who play several roles at work and at home, the pressure can be intense. Wellness is not a luxury; it is essential for sustainable leadership,” she said.

APWB Second Vice Chairperson, Temi Dalley, added that the initiative aimed to prepare female bankers to step into 2026 healthier and more balanced physically, mentally, and emotionally. She said APWB would continue to advocate for policies and programmes that support women’s advancement in banking while promoting wellbeing as a foundation for long-term success.

The Fit to Lead event reinforced APWB’s broader commitment to empowering women in the financial sector through boardroom advocacy, personal development, and sustainable leadership practices.
