SSANU Dismisses 30% Allowance Claim, Insists On April 30 Deadline

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has dismissed claims that the Federal Government approved a 30 per cent increase in allowances for university workers, insisting that negotiations were still ongoing.

The union, in a communiqué signed by its National President, Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim and issued at the end of its Special National Executive Council meeting in Abuja on Saturday, warned that a nationwide strike may commence after April 30, as it disclosed that reports suggesting the conclusion of talks were misleading.

SSANU stated, “NEC expressed serious concern over attempts in the public domain to portray the process as concluded when discussions are still in progress, and no final agreement has been signed by the parties.”

It stressed that no agreement had been reached on any allowance increment, including the widely circulated 30 per cent figure, reaffirming that the renegotiation process with the Federal Government remained unresolved.

The union also reiterated its earlier ultimatum, issued jointly with the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), giving the government from April 1 to April 30, 2026, to conclude negotiations and sign agreements.

“Should the Federal Government fail to conclude the renegotiation process and sign the agreements within the stated period, SSANU will have no alternative but to… commence an indefinite, comprehensive, and total industrial action,” it warned.

SSANU further maintained that it would not accept any outcome that falls short of understandings already reached during negotiations, insisting on fairness and due process.

The union urged its members across branches to remain united and prepared to comply with its directives as the deadline approaches, even as it reaffirmed its commitment to defending the welfare and rights of university workers.
