Barely seven months to the anticipated 2027 general elections, human rights activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, has formally declared his intention to contest the presidential election on the platform of the African Action Congress (AAC).
Sowore, who made this declaration on Friday evening, promised what he described as a renewed drive to reform Nigeria’s political and economic system.
He said his decision was motivated by the urgent need to rebuild governance structures and address what he termed the country’s longstanding leadership failures.
According to him, successive administrations have failed to tackle Nigeria’s core socio-economic and governance challenges, insisting that only deep institutional reforms can reposition the country.
The rights activist said his campaign would focus on transparency, accountability, justice, and citizens’ welfare, while advocating a complete overhaul of what he described as a “broken system.”

Sowore also stressed the importance of youth participation in politics, urging younger Nigerians to play more active roles in shaping the nation’s future ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“The current political structure continues to recycle poor leadership outcomes. Nigeria needs a complete systemic reform that prioritises the people,” he stated.
His declaration has generated mixed reactions across political and civic circles, with supporters commending his consistency and ideology-driven politics, while critics question his electoral strength in a political environment largely dominated by established parties and coalitions.
The announcement adds to growing political activities ahead of the 2027 elections, as parties, aspirants, and political blocs intensify consultations, coalition talks, and strategic alignments.
Sowore first gained national prominence as a pro-democracy activist and publisher before venturing into partisan politics, where he has consistently campaigned on issues of governance reform, anti-corruption, and social justice.
