The calm in Rivers State after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu intervenes in the face-off between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Barr. Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, has come under threat following the plot by the Rivers State House of Assembly to impeach the governor.
According to sources, Martins Amaewhule-led Assembly is currently pursuing a fresh impeachment move against the governor, the fourth attempt since the state’s political crisis erupted in 2023.
After three failed impeachment moves against Fubara, including the last attempt in January, 2026, the lawmakers, according to findings, have been holding meetings to execute the impeachment plot even though past attempts met public outcry and were also stalled by the court.
A major issue that remains unresolved is the passage of the 2016 budget, which has widened the gulf between the camps of Fubara and Wike and affected governance and the activities of the lawmakers.
A source claimed that the lawmakers’ action is influenced by the unending rift between Fubara and Wike, despite the interventions of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reconcile the duo.
The latest impeachment move by the lawmakers against Fubara could escalate tension in the state and ignite a fresh round of crisis that could affect the 2027 elections.
The spark to the latest impeachment plot, according to a source who is privy to the moves by the lawmakers, is the realisation of the pro-Wike lawmakers, led by Amaewhule, that they strongly stand a chance of not returning to the Assembly at the end of the current Assembly.
A few days ago, there were reports that Fubara had allegedly selected the lawmakers he intends to work with when he returns to office, mainly loyal politicians, made up of former council chairmen whose tenure was truncated by the court.
Some of them, core Fubara loyalists, including Chibuike Ihunwo, the immediate past chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, who purchased the nomination form for membership into the Rivers State House of Assembly, were seen flouting their forms.
This development has drawn the attention of Wike supporters, including political allies and youth groups who have vowed to work against their election.
