NLC President, Ajaero Wins Global Labour Rights Award

The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, has been named the 2026 laureate of the Arthur Svensson International Award, becoming the first Nigerian trade union leader to receive the global labour rights honour.

The NLC disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja by its General Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, describing the recognition as a significant milestone for Nigeria’s labour movement.

The Arthur Svensson International Award, established in memory of Norwegian trade unionist Arthur Svensson (1938–2003), is presented to individuals who demonstrate exceptional courage and commitment to defending workers’ rights and trade union freedoms worldwide.

According to the NLC, Ajaero’s emergence as the 2026 laureate highlights the growing international recognition of the struggles faced by Nigerian workers and the role of organised labour in advocating for improved conditions and democratic freedoms.

The Congress said the award was particularly significant at a time when workers in Nigeria face what it described as “state repression, anti-union actions and harsh economic realities.”

It added that the honour reflects the global labour movement’s acknowledgement of the NLC’s efforts under Ajaero’s leadership to defend workers against unfair labour practices, job losses and policies perceived to undermine workers’ welfare.

The union said the recognition should serve as encouragement for Nigerian workers to remain united in the struggle for fair wages, improved working conditions and respect for labour rights.

The NLC noted that previous recipients of the award include labour activists and organisations from countries such as Colombia, Myanmar and Turkey, who have campaigned for workers’ rights under difficult conditions.

It also announced that Ajaero would travel to Oslo, Norway, alongside a delegation of workers and women leaders of the Congress to receive the award.

The Congress expressed appreciation to the Arthur Svensson Foundation and the Norwegian labour movement for recognising the efforts of Nigerian workers and their leadership.
