Nigeria Ready To Welcome Favour Ofili After Failed Turkey Switch

The President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Tonobok Okowa, has indicated that Favour Ofili could still represent Nigeria in the future after her bid to change allegiance to Turkey was turned down by World Athletics.

New Telegraph recalls that Ofili’s intention to switch countries, first reported in May 2025, caused significant concern within the AFN, with the athlete pointing to dissatisfaction over how her career had been managed by Nigerian athletics officials.

Nearly a year later, the World Athletics Nationality Review Panel declined the application submitted on her behalf by the Türkiye Athletics Federation, following an assessment of the circumstances.

Her case was considered alongside 10 other applications from the same federation, all connected to a state-supported initiative aimed at attracting foreign athletes ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

World Athletics concluded that the moves formed part of a broader recruitment strategy involving financial incentives, which could compromise the fairness of international competitions, discourage investment in local athlete development, and potentially displace homegrown competitors.

The governing body also stressed that its rules allow it to deny nationality transfers if they conflict with wider institutional principles.

Although the panel examined Ofili’s concerns about Nigerian athletics authorities, it determined that they were not sufficient to override these broader considerations. It pointed out that she last competed for Nigeria at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and has since obtained Turkish citizenship, entered into a long-term agreement, and expressed intentions to relocate.

Nonetheless, these factors were deemed inadequate to secure approval under the current regulations.

Reacting through a statement issued by AFN Media Committee head Maxwell Kumoye, Okowa welcomed the possibility of Ofili’s return, highlighting the importance of unity and support for one of the country’s most promising athletes.

“The Athletics Federation of Nigeria has officially welcomed sprint sensation Favour Ofili back into its fold, signalling a fresh chapter in the relationship between the athlete and the federation,” the statement read.

“According to Okowa, the focus now should be on providing the right environment for the 100m and 200m star to thrive, stressing that what she needs most from stakeholders is love, support, encouragement, and more love.

“The federation’s stance comes at a crucial time for Nigerian athletics, as it looks to rebuild trust and strengthen athlete relations ahead of major international competitions.

“Ofili’s return is expected to boost Nigeria’s sprint prospects, with the AFN hopeful that renewed backing from officials, fans, and the athletics community will help her reach her full potential on the global stage.”

Ofili remains eligible to compete for Nigeria and individually at international meets like the Diamond League but cannot represent Türkiye in international events.
