Messi’s Hamstring Fatigue Sparks Argentina World Cup Fears

Fresh fears have emerged in Argentina’s World Cup camp after Lionel Messi was diagnosed with muscle fatigue in his left hamstring, less than three weeks before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Inter Miami CF confirmed on Monday that the 38-year-old suffered an “overload associated with muscle fatigue” following medical examinations after he was forced off during Miami’s thrilling 6-4 victory over Philadelphia Union on Sunday.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner appeared uncomfortable in the second half of the MLS clash, grabbing the back of his left leg before signalling to the bench that he could not continue.

Although Messi walked off the pitch without assistance, the incident immediately raised concerns in Argentina, where supporters are anxiously awaiting confirmation of his fitness ahead of the World Cup in North America.

In a brief statement, Inter Miami revealed that Messi’s recovery timeline remains uncertain.

“After undergoing further medical tests this Monday, the initial diagnosis indicates an overload associated with muscle fatigue in his left hamstring,” the club said.

“The timeline for his return to physical activity will depend on his clinical and functional progress.”

The lack of a definitive return date has intensified worries surrounding the captain of the defending world champions. Argentina begin their World Cup campaign against Algeria in Kansas City on June 16, just days after the tournament kicks off across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Messi has carefully managed his fitness since arriving in Major League Soccer in 2023, with Inter Miami frequently resting him during busy periods to avoid muscular injuries. However, with age and workload becoming an increasing concern, the latest setback arrives at a particularly delicate moment.

Despite never formally confirming his participation, Messi is widely expected to feature at the tournament, which would mark a record-equalling sixth World Cup appearance for the Argentine icon. The national team is expected to announce its final squad next week before travelling to the United States for warm-up matches against Honduras and Iceland.

Argentina fans will now wait nervously for further updates, hoping the injury proves minor enough for their talisman to lead another title defence on football’s biggest stage.
