Lagos to introduce on-street parking scheme by 2026

Motorists in Lagos will soon begin paying to park on designated streets, as the Lagos State Parking Authority moves to introduce a regulated on-street parking scheme before the end of 2026.

The General Manager of LASPA, Adebisi Adelabu, disclosed this during a stakeholder engagement visit to the Chairman of Ikeja Local Government Area, Akeem Dauda, and members of his management team.

The development was confirmed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the agency’s Head of Public Affairs, Dunkwu Divine.

Adelabu explained that the initiative, which will take off as a pilot scheme in selected councils, including Ikeja, is designed to restore order on Lagos roads, reduce congestion, and create jobs for residents within the affected communities.

According to her, the move is part of broader efforts to tackle the persistent chaos associated with indiscriminate roadside parking across the state.

“The On-Street Parking Scheme will improve parking management, enhance traffic flow, and generate employment opportunities, particularly for residents within the selected areas,” noting that trained personnel would be deployed to manage the system and ensure compliance.

She further clarified that the responsibility for parking management, which was previously under the control of local government councils, had been formally transferred to LASPA by the Conference of the 57 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas in Lagos. This, she said, provides a unified structure for enforcement and accountability.

Adelabu added that local councils would benefit from the initiative, depending on their level of cooperation, urging them to work closely with the authority to guarantee its success. “We are open to collaboration and inputs from all stakeholders. This is a collective effort aimed at making Lagos a more organised and livable city,” she stated.

Responding, Ikeja LGA Chairman, Akeem Dauda, welcomed the initiative and pledged the council’s full support for its implementation. He, however, stressed the need for aggressive public sensitisation to ensure residents and motorists understand the objectives and modalities of the scheme.

“We support this initiative because it is long overdue. However, there is a need for proper awareness so that people are not caught off guard. Residents must be carried along every step of the way,” Dauda said.
