Lagos Shuts Outbound Eko Bridge For Emergency Repairs

Diverts Traffic to Third Mainland Bridge

The Lagos State Government has announced the immediate closure of the outbound carriageway of Eko Bridge for emergency safety inspections and repair works.

The closure, which takes effect from Tuesday, May 12, 2026, was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday by the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi.

According to the commissioner, the affected section covers the stretch from Apongbon to Ijora Olopa outbound toward Lagos Island.

Osiyemi explained that the temporary shutdown became necessary to enable urgent structural assessments and maintenance works aimed at safeguarding motorists and preserving the integrity of the bridge.

Motorists travelling toward Lagos Island have been advised to make use of the Third Mainland Bridge as an alternative route during the repair period.

He, however, clarified that the inward Lagos Island carriageway of Eko Bridge would remain open to traffic throughout the duration of the exercise.

“The inward Lagos Island carriageway will remain open to motorists,” the commissioner stated.

To minimise traffic congestion along diversion routes, Osiyemi said the government had put adequate traffic management measures in place.

According to him, traffic management officials and security operatives would be strategically deployed around affected corridors to direct motorists and maintain order.

“Adequate traffic and security personnel will be deployed along alternative routes to guide motorists and ensure smooth traffic flow,” he added.

The commissioner appealed to residents and road users to cooperate with authorities and exercise patience during the repair period, stressing that the intervention was critical to ensuring public safety and protecting key transport infrastructure across the state.
