Lagos NMA Suspends Secretary, Others Over Illegal Removal Of Chairman

Arising from the Emergency State Executive (SEC) Council meeting held on Thursday, the Lagos State Branch of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has suspended the Secretary of the State Branch, Dr Jimoh Hassan and other members of the State Officers Committee for their roles in the unconstitutional gathering of April 18 at Hall 36, Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba.

These are contained in a statement jointly signed by Dr Babajide Kehinde Saheed, Chairman, NMA Lagos State, Dr Olusola Soyinka Jnr, Secretary, NMA Lagos State and Dr Bisoye Akinsulire, Publicity Secretary, NMA Lagos State.

The SEC noted that the actions of Dr Jimoh Hassan and others violated relevant provisions of the NMA Lagos State Rules and Regulations, and the Constitution of the NMA.

Others who were suspended along with the secretary are: Dr Temidire Ewonowo, Dr Ajibola Salami, Dr Oluwaseyi Lawal Gbadamosi, Dr Nimotallahi Ibikunle and Dr Ismail Ajibowo.

Consequently, the SEC resolved that the Deputy Secretary, Dr Olusola Soyinka Jr., should take over as the Secretary of NMA Lagos in acting capacity, effective immediately.

According to the statement, this decision was unanimously taken by the Emergency State Executive Council to protect the integrity of the Association and enhance accountability.

The Association reiterates its unwavering commitment to discipline, due process, and the preservation of its institutional integrity.

Recall that on April 18 at Hall 36 LUTH), Idi-Araba, at an emergency general meeting, over 100 members voted and removed Dr Saheed from office.

After the exercise, Dr Ewunowo, who previously served as first vice chairman, emerged as the new substantive chairman.

However, the Emergency Delegates Meeting, EDM of the national body, which convened in Abuja on Wednesday, 15 April, requested that the unconstitutional removal of Saheed as chairman be reversed.
