Kwankwaso Denies ADC Defection Rumours, Says No Decision Yet On Political Future

Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has dismissed reports suggesting a possible realignment within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stating that no final decision has been taken regarding his political future or that of his associates.

In a statement on Sunday addressing growing speculation, Kwankwaso said recent narratives about his position in the ADC are misleading.

He noted that consultations are ongoing amid internal challenges facing the party.

He stressed that while a recent Supreme Court judgment affirmed the legitimacy of the David Mark-led National Working Committee, the matter was also remitted back to the High Court, leaving the party in a delicate situation.

Kwankwaso added that a Federal High Court ruling has further complicated matters by delegitimising the party’s recent convention.

Kwankwaso also revealed that the Attorney General of the Federation has filed an application seeking to deregister the ADC, describing the development as unusual and part of the pressures confronting the party.

The former Minister of Defence explained that his political camp had previously exited the New Nigeria Peoples Party due to legal challenges, noting that the ADC is now facing similar difficulties.

He disclosed that wide-ranging consultations are underway with stakeholders across political platforms, including the National Democratic Coalition (NDC) and the Peoples Redemption Party, to determine the best path forward.

On presidential ambition, Kwankwaso reiterated his record as a loyal party man, recalling his participation in the 2014 All Progressives Congress presidential primary, where he finished second behind Muhammadu Buhari, and his role in supporting Atiku Abubakar after contesting the 2019 Peoples Democratic Party presidential ticket.

He emphasized that the ADC has yet to zone its presidential ticket or decide on a candidate, adding that he has neither declared any intention to run nor endorsed any aspirant.

Kwankwaso further clarified that his absence from recent ADC stakeholders’ meetings was due to prior personal commitments, which were duly communicated to party leadership.

He assured that any decision on his political direction will be formally communicated at the appropriate time.
