As thuggery and Daba fighting escalated in Kano State, the State Police Command has launched a Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) with a strong warning against the perpetrators of the crime to stop or be prosecuted.
Speaking on Monday while commissioning the units, the State Commissioner of Police, Dr Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, said it is a significant milestone in their commitment to safer and more secure communities in Kano State.
“Today, we officially launch the operational office of the Violent Crime Response Unit. Established on 24th April 2026, in accordance with the Directorate of Police, IGP Olatunji Rulwan Disu.”
Bakori said, ” This launch represents the operationalisation of our resolve to combat violent crimes with speed, precision, and professionalism.
“The VCRU is a specialised intelligent driving tactical unit created to decisively address cases of armed robbery, kidnapping, hijacking, and other violent crimes that threaten public safety and economic activities in Kano State.
He added that, “With the launch of this office, the Kano State Police Command is now in a better position to respond faster to the district court to violent crime incidents across the state, prevent, manage, and control violent crimes through proactive deployments and intelligence-led operations.
And Investigate and prosecute offenders effectively, ensuring that justice is overtly served without delay. Our goal is simple. Reduce response time, dominate the public space, and deny criminals the freedom to operate in the state.
The Police Chief hints that VCRU is not a unit for every police officer. We have carefully selected and deployed trained, professional, committed, dedicated, and resolve-oriented police officers to form this unit. Each officer has undergone rigorous screening and mandatory training in tactical response, human rights, professional conduct, and intelligence handling in line with global best practices.”
“Displaying integrity and respect for human rights will remain the guiding principle of this VCRU operation. I take personal responsibility for the conduct, performance, and public image of this unit.
This launch aligns fully with the sweeping reforms and directives of the National Police on intelligence-led policing and community partnership.”
He explained that the Unit will operate on real-time intelligence, data analysis, and credible information from the public. We will sustain aggressive community engagement to build trust, gather information, and ensure that policing and criminal justice are shared responsibilities.
Disclosing that to further strengthen public confidence, we have established the VCRU State Civilian Oversight Board comprising civil society leaders, traditional rulers, legal practitioners, and community representatives.
“A dedicated public complaint desk has been set up at the base, and all complaints will be acknowledged and responded to within time.
In location and contact channels, the VCRU headquarters is carefully and strategically chosen for ease of accessibility and coordination within the central state of Kano Metropolis. At number two, Bank Road, adjacent to Metro Area Command Kano.
