A former presidential aspirant, Alhaji Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, has commended the professionalism and commitment of the Nigeria media in promoting democracy in the country.

Alhaji Hayatu-Deen who was the guest of honour at the Silver Jubilee Awards ceremony of Daily Independent Newspapers in Lagos on Saturday, said the newspaper’s survival and growth over the past quarter century represents a triumph that is far more than a business success.

In a statement by his media office in Abuja, the chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), underscored the importance of a free and independent press in democracy.

According to him, “a free and independent press serves as society’s early warning system. “It shines light when there is darkness, asks questions where silence would be easier and speaks truth where power may prefer convenience.’’
