Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, on Monday expressed support for the re-election of the incumbent senator, Friday Konbowei Benson following the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial primaries in the state on 18 May, 2026.
Diri, who participated in the Bayelsa Central Senatorial District primary at Sampou/Kalama Ward 6 in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area, said the exercise was generally peaceful across the three senatorial districts.
According to the governor, stakeholders in Bayelsa Central resolved to return Senator Benson for another term ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He noted that the conduct of the primaries mirrored the peaceful atmosphere recorded during the House of Representatives primaries held across the state earlier on Saturday, 16 May, 2026.
Diri commended party leaders and members for their massive turnout across the 105 wards, describing it as a strong show of unity and commitment within the APC.
He expressed optimism that the party is well-positioned for victory in the 2027 elections, citing growing cohesion among members in Bayelsa State.
