COAS Tasks Army Commanders On Accountability, Combat Readiness

The Chief of Army Staff, Waidi Shaibu (COAS), has charged commanders of the Nigerian Army to strengthen operational effectiveness through accountability, professionalism, and results-driven leadership.

Shaibu gave the directive while delivering his closing remarks at the 2026 Chief of Army Staff Bi-Annual Conference held at the Nigerian Army Conference Centre and Suites in Asokoro, Abuja.

According to the Army Chief, the conference provided an opportunity to assess ongoing security operations and develop strategies for tackling emerging threats across the country.

He stated that discussions during the conference focused on improving operational responses, enhancing training systems, and adapting to Nigeria’s evolving security environment.

The COAS said the Army is working towards building a more agile, technologically advanced, and combat-ready force capable of addressing contemporary security challenges.

Highlighting recent capability improvements, Shaibu disclosed that the Army had acquired additional tactical drones and reconfigured aviation assets for combat operations.

He noted that the upgrades have improved intelligence gathering, precision strikes, operational mobility, and casualty evacuation during military operations.

The Army Chief also stressed the importance of recruitment, advanced training, leadership development, and professional military education in sustaining institutional efficiency and operational success.

Reaffirming his “soldier-first” philosophy, Shaibu directed commanders to prioritise troop welfare through prompt payment of entitlements, better healthcare, educational support, and improved welfare packages for personnel and their families.

He urged military commanders to ensure that resolutions reached at the conference translate into measurable operational results on the field.

Shaibu further appreciated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other security stakeholders for their continued support and collaboration with the Nigerian Army.

The event also featured the presentation of commendation plaques to senior officers who completed their tours of duty, alongside the unveiling of the Nigerian Army Heritage and Feature Centre insignia.
