The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Sokoto State University (SSU) and Shehu Shagari University of Education (SSUES) branches have expressed appreciation for the approval of 40% Consolidated Academic Allowance (CATA) for academic staff of the two state-owned universities.
In a statement issued by Dr Bello Musa, Chairperson, ASUU-SSU, and Dr Shamsudeen Kabir, Chairperson, ASUU-SSUES, the unions said they write on behalf of ASUU-SSU and ASUU-SSUES to express profound gratitude to the Sokoto State Government under the leadership of His Excellency, Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto, for being the first state in the North-West region to approve the implementation of the ASUU-FGN Agreement of December 2025.
In particular, the union acknowledged the approval for the implementation of a 40% increment for academic staff, the payment of Earned Academic Allowance, EAA, for two academic sessions, and the constitution of the Governing Council for Shehu Shagari University of Education, Sokoto.
These landmark achievements, the union said, clearly demonstrate His Excellency’s unwavering commitment to the advancement of higher education in Sokoto State.
“We once again thank His Excellency for his exemplary leadership and steadfast commitment to the development of education in Sokoto State,” the statement added.
While expressing sincere gratitude for these approvals, the union respectfully appealed for favourable consideration of other outstanding claims, including unpaid third-party deductions for cooperative and union check-off dues for several months.
The statement further noted that promotion arrears for seven academic sessions, as well as arrears of the 25%/35% salary adjustment for 14 months from January 2024 to February 2025, are still outstanding.
