Arsenal Reach Semi-Finals Despite 0-0 Stalemate Sporting

Arsenal booked their place in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals on Wednesday night after a tense 0-0 draw with Sporting CP at the Emirates Stadium, sealing a 1-0 aggregate victory that keeps their European dream alive.

Coming into the second leg with a slender advantage, Mikel Arteta’s side delivered a cautious and at times nervy performance, doing just enough to see off a determined Sporting outfit.

While the result marked a historic achievement, back-to-back Champions League semi-final appearances for the first time in the club’s history, the display itself left plenty to be desired.

The Gunners struggled to impose themselves in front of their home crowd, managing only a single shot on target across the 90 minutes.

Their lack of attacking fluency reflected a team short on confidence, having lost three of their previous four matches in all competitions. Despite Arteta’s pre-match insistence that his players had “no fear,” the performance suggested otherwise.

Sporting, by contrast, looked the more threatening side for long spells. The Portuguese visitors came closest to breaking the deadlock just before half-time when Geny Catamo rattled the post, silencing the Emirates and briefly raising the prospect of a dramatic turnaround.

After the break, Sporting continued to press, sensing vulnerability in Arsenal’s defence. Goalkeeper David Raya endured a shaky evening, gifting possession on a few occasions, but the visitors failed to capitalise on those openings.

Their inability to convert chances ultimately proved costly as Arsenal clung on to their aggregate lead.

Arteta will take solace in the result rather than the performance, with a blockbuster semi-final clash against Atlético Madrid now awaiting.

However, concerns remain ahead of a crucial Premier League showdown with Manchester City this weekend, a match that could prove decisive in the title race.

Adding to those worries is a potential injury to Noni Madueke, who was forced off after appearing to suffer a knee issue following a challenge. With Arsenal already dealing with an expanding injury list, his fitness will be closely monitored in the coming days.
