Army Confirms Arrest Of Blogger After Releasing Video Criticising

The Nigerian Army has confirmed the arrest of a blogger, Mark Chidiebere, who was declared missing by his family after he released a video criticizing the army over the poor welfare of troops at the frontlines.

In a statement at the weekend, Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Col. Appolonia Anele, said the blogger’s arrest followed complaints shared by the blogger on social media regarding soldiers’ feeding conditions and welfare concerns.

According to her, preliminary investigations revealed the blogger engaged some soldiers in discussions allegedly aimed at creating discontent within the ranks.

She said: “Some of the exchanges are considered to border on subversive conduct.” Anele added: “It is important to state that a situation where civilians cultivate vulnerable personnel towards acts of subversion has far-reaching implications on discipline and national security.

“Hence, Justice Chidiebere was picked by the Nigerian Army alongside the soldiers for investigation. “While the soldiers remain in their own custody, Chidiebere has been handed over to the relevant civil authorities for further investigation and possible prosecution.”
