APC Wants Security Agencies To Place Makinde On Security Alert

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on security agencies to place Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on security alert over comments it described as inciting violence, following remarks he made at a political gathering in Ibadan.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, on Sunday in Abuja, the ruling party accused the Oyo State Governor of invoking the violent history of Operation Wetie to stir unrest, warning that such rhetoric poses a threat to national peace and stability.

According to the party, it was “Deeply disturbing” that a sitting governor and chief security officer of his state would reference one of Nigeria’s darkest episodes of political violence, describing Makinde’s remarks as reckless and dangerous.

The party added that the governor’s comments go beyond mere political opposition and could fuel “anarchy, murderous rage and widespread lawlessness.”

It urged security and intelligence agencies to take the matter seriously and act proactively to safeguard lives, property, and the country’s democratic order.

The statement further stressed that while governors enjoy constitutional immunity, such protection does not extend to actions or statements deemed to threaten national security, insisting that no individual should be allowed to endanger public safety under the guise of political commentary.

The ruling party also used the opportunity to criticise opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party Nigeria, and the African Democratic Congress, accusing them of internal disarray, poor leadership, and failure to present a credible alternative vision for Nigeria.

APC alleged that internal crises within these parties, including disputes over leadership and presidential ambitions, have weakened their capacity to function effectively, describing their coalition efforts as disorganised and self-serving.

Reaffirming its confidence in Nigerians’ judgment, the APC said parties unable to manage their internal affairs cannot be trusted with governing the country.

It also dismissed claims of a drift toward a one-party state, maintaining that Nigeria’s democratic space remains vibrant with multiple active political parties.

The party reiterated its commitment to democratic governance under the leadership of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, pledging to continue strengthening institutions, upholding the rule of law, and advancing its Renewed Hope agenda ahead of the 2027 general elections.
