APC May Lose Plateau If Zoning Is Ignored, Group Warns

A political group in Plateau State, under the banner of Concerned Members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has raised alarm over what it described as emerging threats to the party’s chances ahead of the 2027 general elections.

This is as the group warned that disregard for existing zoning arrangements could cost the party victory in the State.

The Convener of the group, Ambassador Paul Mengshak, in a message directed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, argued that Plateau State’s complex political structure makes electoral outcomes unpredictable unless political balance and zoning principles are strictly respected.

He said: “Plateau State is a multi-tribal state with a long history of political zoning that predates democracy itself. The political landscape here is such that it can spring surprises, dethrone political kings, and even enthrone a perceived nonentity depending on how the people feel.”

He cautioned that it would be “deceitful and erroneous” for the APC to assume automatic victory in 2027 simply because the State Governor and the APC National Chairman belong to the same political party.

According to him, internal equity and zoning arrangements remain the strongest determinants of electoral success in the State.

“The important factor for APC to win the 2027 election in Plateau State is the maintenance of zoning arrangements in the constituent parts of the state. Zoning is non-negotiable in Plateau politics, especially in constituencies with diverse ethnic and religious compositions,” he added.

Mengshak further warned that zoning disputes in one constituency could trigger wider political backlash across the State.

“These issues are infectious. The effect from one constituency can spread like wildfire to another. Once you give Plateau people reasons why your party may lose in one area, you have indirectly strengthened resistance in others,” he said.

He cited alleged political tensions in Mikang Local Government Area, accusing some actors of fueling internal crisis through ambition and influence-peddling.

He specifically referenced the Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Naanlong Daniel Gapyil, whom he accused of pursuing what he described as “needless political desperation” in his bid for a fourth term.

“Naanlong is blinded by desperation and has used acquired influence to manipulate some close associates of the Governor. If for any reason he becomes the APC flag bearer, how can the party win Mikang?” Mengshak asked.

He also alleged that internal lobbying efforts had been extended to the APC national leadership, urging intervention to prevent what he described as a potentially damaging political decision.

“Mr President should advise the National Chairman and the Governor to stop this ill-driven ambition. There are more qualified candidates within the district who can serve better,” he said, naming other potential aspirants from the area.

The APC group also raised concerns about other constituencies in the State, warning of possible electoral setbacks if zoning arrangements are ignored.

In Langtang North and South, Mengshak insisted that political representation should be rotated in line with established agreements. In Pankshin, Kanke and Kanam, he warned against what he called another “looming disaster” if current representation patterns are not reviewed.

“Gagdi is from a minority group in the area. If he is given the ticket without consideration for balance, APC risks losing that constituency,” he said.

On Mangu and Bokkos, he suggested a review of existing arrangements to allow Bokkos greater representation in the House of Representatives seat.

He further described Plateau North as a major battleground ahead of future elections, noting emerging agitation for the Senate seat from Bassa, Jos East and Jos North.

However, he urged that the senatorial ticket be preserved for the Berom ethnic group if the APC hopes to remain competitive.

“The Senate ticket should go to a Berom person if APC truly wants to win in Plateau State,” he stated.

Mengshak concluded by appealing directly to President Tinubu to intervene and ensure cohesion within the party structure in the state.

“What Plateau needs now is a total win for Mr President and for the Governor, but that can only happen if zoning arrangements are respected and internal tensions are properly managed,” he said
