Chemstar reaffirms commitment to employee health, safety

Chemstar Industries Nigeria Limited, maker and marketer of the Finecoat and Shield Paints brands and other related paint products, has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a safe workplace and promoting the health and wellbeing of its workforce.

The Group Managing Director, Mr Adedayo Paseda, disclosed this while declaring open this year’s edition of the Chemstar Industries Limited Health & Safety Week 2026, which was instituted as part of the company’s policies to enhance the well-being of the staff. The three-day event, held at the paint company’s headquarters, Finecoat House, Casso, along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway in Alagbado, Lagos, was themed ‘Safe and Healthy Living: A Priority for All,’ with the sub-theme, ‘Fire Safety: A Priority for All.’

According to him, the Health & Safety Week is an annual initiative introduced by management in recognition of the importance of employee wellbeing and maintaining a safe work environment to drive optimal productivity.

Represented by the Managing Director of C-PIN Chemicals, a subsidiary of the company, Mr Fola Laguda, the GMD said employee health and safety remain paramount and are regarded as the company’s top priority.

Paseda also noted that the programme has over the years become the major concern and given adequate attention in the scheme of the company’s activities, explaining that the yearly three-day programme focused mainly on medical and health talks on day one and medical check-ups, as well as fire safety lectures and fire drills by fire officers from Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, on days two and three, respectively.

The GMD further stressed that the health and safety week is not just a policy of the company, but an avowed commitment and concern for the overall well-being of members of staff.

The health and safety programme, which he described as “a yearly impactful programme” in the life of the staff and company, according to Paseda, is to imbue in the staff the need not to take their health and safety matters with levity, and to reinforce the consciousness for them to take their well-being, health and safety very important at work and home.

“For us, the safety and health of our staff is a priority. Not many companies are doing things like this.” The yearly programme is to foster a healthy workforce and ensure a safe and healthy working environment by building safety consciousness in the workers for enhanced productivity,” he said.

The General Manager, Operations and Chairman of the Health & Safety Week Committee, Cyprian Ukpai, expressed concern that many workers and individuals often neglect routine medical check-ups, and urged that such check-ups should be embraced as a normal and essential part of life.

“The company prioritises the health and safety of its workers and will continue to invest in it,” he stressed, stressing that a healthy workforce will produce a healthy and productive system.

Delivering a health talk, Dr Keziah Danjuma from the company’s HMO focused on the importance and benefits of regular medical check-ups, urging staff to routinely visit hospitals or physicians to stay healthy and fit.

“Prevention is always better than cure, and early detection of sickness is the best way to manage any health challenge,” she said, adding that this could only be detected through regular checkup.

Meanwhile, the Chief Fire Officer, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services, and Head of the Fire and Rescue Unit at the Lagos State Building Control Agency, Mrs Funmi Johnson, who also spoke on “Fire Safety: A Priority for All”, noted that fire safety is everyone’s business and concern that should be taken with utmost priority.

She stressed the need for a refresher programme to equip the workers with growing and evolving knowledge of fire safety.
